Talking to someone about this time in my life was really enjoyable but also a healing experience. As you will hear, being 11 for me was both full of adventure but also some trauma from moving countries and being separated from my family.
I really recommend anyone who would like to tell their 11 year old story, to get in contact with Amanda. She is an extremely sensitive and caring interviewer. Amanda also helps people with digital memoirs. Also a shout out to the crew at Freocast who play her podcast on Mondays at 3 pm.
I was keen to record my memoir as I would like my children to remember the country of their birth and also how we all learned to adjust to the Australian way of life.
The advantage of having your story recorded rather than writing it is that your facial expressions and voice reflect your emotions when you are recalling happy or sad times and this makes it so much more personal.
I am really pleased with the finished product with some precious photographs included relevant to my story.
I always loved listening to my grandmother's stories from when she was young. The life back then was so different from our life now that it was hard to even imagine. My family always wished to record her memoir somehow but writing a book was way out of our capabilities. That's why I jumped at the opportunity to record my and my family's story with Amanda. I was surprised how much I still remembered! And I am happy that my nephews and nieces can get to know a little bit of their great grandmother through the stories we have recorded. This is so much better than a book. It's priceless! Thank you Amanda.
You only ever hear about the Partition on the 'big scale'. Millions of people crossing borders. You never really hear about individuals or the groups of people, the families. So for the grandad that I knew to take those men into the house and give them shelter was actually quite surprising. Mum had never told me that story before. It only came up 60yrs after the event.
Doing the video and film production was a good exercise because you learn anecdotes about people you already know (or think you know). Just an extra little kernel of their life story.
With the extended lockdowns in Melbourne during the worst of the covid pandemic, it was a blessing to be able to record a dedication to my grandmother on the occasion of her 80th birthday. While we couldn't be with her in person due to border closures, she got to feel like we were.
It made a tough situation easier.
My children kept begging me to record my memoir and I finally got around to it a few months ago. Adding personal photos to my narrative was a special touch that brought it all l back to life even for me. I really have lived through so many changes and my great grandchildren had no idea!
They learned so much about me! I highly recommend Amanda at SoFro Media.
The experience has taught me how important it is to not only remember and share memories with loved ones, but to actually have those memories recorded. So that my children will always be able to hear my stories, their heritage, for years to come when I possibly may not be able to share them.
Time travelling back to childhood with you was magical for me✨
There is such great joy and beauty in sharing our own little and big stories💛
Everyone should do this!
It took me a while really thinking about a time so long ago that I thought I had forgotten. In my experience doing the podcast, I realised significant things that happened in my life back then that have shaped who I am today.
I finally had a chance to properly listen to your podcast today - I listened to the Edenhope episodes first of course! It is fantastic!
You should be on the ABC doing Conversation hour! Get it on Spotify! 5 star review
It’s a wonderful opportunity to walk down memory lane. Thank you SoFro!
